hi
i m new to NCat and having issues with few options -g -G -s --sctp
here a brief summery:
<br />
-g ncat -g proxy-source-IP -v remote-IP 31337 # from source-IP to remote returns source-IP NOT proxy-source-IP as it is supposed to ex: from 1.0.0.0: ncat -g 1.0.1.0 -v 1.1.0.0 31337 is supposed to return 1.0.1.0 NOT 1.0.0.0<br />
-G ncat -G 4 -v remote-IP 31337 # what does G4 EXACTLY mean here ?<br />
-s proxy-source-IP ncat -s proxy-source-IP -v remote-IP 31337 # from source-IP to remote returns source-IP NOT proxy-source-IP as it is supposed to ex: from 1.0.0.0: ncat -s 1.0.1.0 -v 1.1.0.0 31337 is supposed to return 1.0.1.0 NOT 1.0.0.0<br />
--sctp ncat -v remote-IP --sctp 31338 # input goes to shell NOT ncat as STDERR replies input (see below)<br />
<br />
--sctp<br />
Ncat: Version 6.00 ( http://nmap.org/ncat )<br />
foo<br />
No command 'foo' found, did you mean:<br />
Command 'fio' from package 'fio' (main)<br />
Command 'xoo' from package 'xoo' (main)<br />
Command 'fop' from package 'fop' (main)<br />
Command 'fox' from package 'objcryst-fox' (main)<br />

I've been trying to install the package isc-dhcp-server on my Raspberry Pi (using Raspbian Wheezy) but after installing, it fails to start the service. I get this:
Setting up isc-dhcp-server (4.2.2.dfsg.1-5+deb70u6) ...
[FAIL] Starting ISC DHCP Server: dhcpd[....] check syslog for diagnostics. ... failed!
Now, I'm a total Linux noob, what can I do to find the origin of the error and fix it?
Also, I'm following this guide[^] but I'm stuck at this point.

This is not a question, it is a fix to an issue I ran into. I couldn't find anywhere else to post this. Seemed to belong here more than Code Project.
I had a Toshiba Tecra A6 that was sitting around doing nothing so I decided to install Fedora 18 on it. I initially put the ISO on an 8GB USB drive using the Fedora Live USB Creator[^] and found that installation would choke and die when checking the installation media location.
So I booted from a DVD and the installation went through with no issues, but after the initial reboot I was presented with a black screen with a flashing underscore cursor in the top left hand corner. This wasn't much use as I couldn't use Fedora.
So after a bit of searching I found this page about Reinstall Grub 2 in Fedora 17[^], following is command by command play on what I found doing this on Fedora 18.
Boot from the DVD
Select Troubleshooting <-'
Select Rescue a Fedora System <-'
Select Continue <-'
Select OK <-'
Select OK <-'
Select shell Start shell
Select OK <-'
chroot /mnt/sysimage <-'
grub-install /dev/sda <-'
grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub2/grub.cfg <-'
exit <-'
exit <-'
Select reboot Reboot
Select OK <-'
After the reboot the GRUB 2 screen came up, I selected Fedora and it booted in fine.

You could have posted this as a tip. Might have been easier to find.

Do any of you have experience with an affordable data recovery service? Or even better, a cheap fix for our "little" problem described below?
Last week one of our servers apparently had a simultaneous failure on 2 of 4 drives in a RAID 5 configuration. Unfortunately, there is no recent backup of the data and attempts to get the system back up with assistance from Dell have not been successful.
We realize there might not be "good" fix for this and have been searching the Internet for options as well as data recovery companies.
System
Dell Power Edge 2600
RAID 5 configuration with 4 SCSI hard drives
3xSeagate ST336607LC (36 gb) original drives (0,1 & 3)
1xFujitsu MAW307RNC (73 gb) replaced awhile back (2)
Error description
Drives 0 & 1 are malfunctioning
System will not boot
Forced 0 online to see if system would boot, it did not.
Turned off 0 and forced 1 online to see if system would boot, it did not.
In both cases, system begins boot process and gets about 75% through progress bar on Windows splash screen then exits to BSOD, error 0x0000007B – Boot device unavailable

Thanks. This is actually one of the first hits we found as well when we started searching. The free tool could not help us because it only handles RAID5 with one disk missing (I still cannot believe we lost two at the same time). All the experts told us not to fiddle around too much or we might cause a lot of damage.
We opted for a $1350 "flat rate with no diagnostic fee" solution. They have had the stuff for a couple of weeks and already told us all files could be recovered.

Glad to hear it.
There are several methods to recover data from a disk depending on what is actually wrong with it.
From what I understand from some of my research from wanting to get into Deep data recovery.
They some times only have one shot to get the data off a bad disk and save it as a disk image.
And the Equiptemnt Was way out of my budget, even for the cheap stuff.
But Some companys even though they recover everything only give you the data back that you asked for.
And what they agreed to charge you for.

|
|
|
|
Good to know.
We asked them if they would be able to recover the whole thing, meaning the bootable OS and all. They said they normally would not do that because they are not able to verify that it is actually working, but they would make an exception. We are still waiting to get it back though.
Just between the two of us ( ), it was our domain server and we have had numerous issues running without it. We did set up a new one and started migrating desktop systems to it, but some of the file servers have complex user and group privileges on the shares.
I will not go into the reasons why we do not have a working backup of the domain server.

If you only had one disk missing, then you would not have noticed any drama accessing your data, though you would have received notice from the RAID that one of your disks was dead.
RAID 5 allows for one disk to die and not affect the RAID. RAID 5 allows for the redundancy of 1 disk with parity spread around. When 2 disk go, you'are sh*t out of luck.
|
|
|
|
|
Right. If one drive is dead, but the RAID is undamaged, it is just a matter of replacing the drive. The free tool can be used for repairing a damaged or failed (not sure what the correct term is) RAID5 with zero or one missing/dead drive.
In any case, since we were in the "out of luck" situation, we left it up to experts to fix it for us.

Tested on 3 different Windows 2008 R2 servers. After and automated update RDP breaks. Be careful if you are colocating things.....
The updates we had issue with are these. I am not sure what one triggered the issue for us but I believe it is one of these...

I did a windows Update and then my Vista Partition started crashing on boot.
Had to do a system restore after running the Startup troubleshooter.
The log said it was a Patch, but didn't tell me which one.
Go figure.

When you first look around and want to ask a question it is not real clear on where to ask it.
I would like to see a section where you ask questions like on The Code project rather than a forum format like the general SysAdmin discussions section.
Things tend to blur together there.

Just for you.

Hi. I just purchased a VPS server and need to install a webserver and a VPN server to start with.
Server is running Linux Ubuntu.
Do you have any recommendation on software needed and how to configure the server to have a stable environment(Secure, robust, reliable)?
Any tutorials or related threads would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers!

Well if you need a webserver and its not installed use apachee. Are you using any PHP or MySQL?
Chances are you will need a LAMP server...
The basics to install it is to drop to the command line and typ the following two commands
sudo apt-get install tasksel
and then
sudo tasksel install lamp-server
This will get you up and running. If you already have some of these installed you may have issues with those above commands.
As for VPN, there are a number of ways to do this. do you need to use VPN or can you just use SSH? SSH is considered secure and will let you do everything you need to do from command line. Everything in linux can be done via command line.
to install ssh
sudo apt-get install openssh-server
Then to connect to your SSH server with on your windows machine you can install and download putty from here.... Use the EXE download, no install just download it and run it.

Lamp server sounds good. Will try and see if the components are not already installed.
As for ssh, it is already installed. I want vpn to enable anonymous surfing.

We you looking for a web based VPN solution, so someone hits an https page then they get presented with a login and password and it opens up a port based VPN session? or are you looking for a full blown VPN into your network with like IPSEC or PPTP type thing?
|
|
|
|
|
No web based vpn just a straight forward open vpn connection from my home computer to the server. The webserver has nothing to do with the vpn. At the moment I just want to connect from home to the internet via the vpn.

|
|
|

This should get you in the right direction... firgure out what one suits your needs and go from there. PPTP is least secure as far as most people are concerned but it is the most versitile. Iphone, Macs, Windows, Blackberries etc...
